Prof. Dr. Christian Kaunert is the Academic Director and Full Professor of European Politics in the Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium with research focus on the Global Security role of the EU, especially in the area of EU Justice and Home Affairs, with a particular focus on terrorism and counter-terrorism.
He served as a Full Professor of International Politics (2014–2016), Head of Discipline, Politics, School of Social Sciences, and the Director of the European Institute for Security and Justice, Jean Monnet Centre for Excellence (2014) at the University of Dundee. He has been awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Justice and Home Affairs Policy in 2013, and received the Marie Curie Career Integration Grant from 2012 to 2016, both held at the University of Dundee.
He has taught at various international universities such as the University of Berkley, California, ESB Reutlingen in Germany, Charles University of Prague, Shandong in China, IBEI Barcelona in Spain, Diplomatic Academy Yerevan in Armenia, University of Cairo in Egypt, Collegio Carlo Alberto, Turin in Italy, Ecole nationale d’administration Paris, European Institute of Public Administration at Maastricht, European Studies Institute (ESI) at Moscow, University of Porto in Portugal, etc.
A member of the editorial board of the journal Perspectives on European Politics and Society (PEPS), he has also served as the Editor of the Journal of Contemporary European Research (JCER), an Executive Committee member of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES), and an Expert for the European Parliament.
He is the author of numerous articles on EU Justice and Home Affairs, EU counter-terrorism, EU asylum and migration, and wider EU global security matters and frequently acts as speaker or panelist at international conferences on his areas of expertise. He speaks native-level German and English and is fluent in French, Spanish, and Italian.
