Nikolaos Toskas is the Alternate Minister of Interior in charge of Citizen Protection since September, 2015.
An active member of Greek politics since 1971, he displayed a significant resistance action against the Greek Junta (1967 – 1974) along with his military career. From 2006 to 2011 he cooperated with Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) political party and its affiliated think tank Institute for Strategic and Development Studies (ISTAME) on defense Issues. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the Director of the Deputy National Defense Minister’s political office. A member of the “PRATTO” political movement since 2011, he was elected as a Member of the Parliament with the Coalition of Radical Left (SYRIZA) in January 2015 (and re-elected in September of 2015). From January to September of 2015 he served as a Deputy Minister of National Defense.
A career military officer, Nikolaos Toskas served for more than 30 years in Hellenic Army posts of Armoured Corps in Macedonia, Aegean and Thrace, thus becoming the commander of 25th Armoured Brigade, based at Xanthi. He also served in the Hellenic Army General Staff, in the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS) at operational, intelligence and defense planning and as the Director of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff’s Chief Office, responsible for General Staff’s main duties coordination. His military career includes, also, postings in NATO Headquarters at Brussels as a defense policy specialist and in NATO Allied Joint Force Command in Naples (Italy) and Sarajevo (Bosnia) as an intelligence specialist, covering the areas of Balkan Peninsula, Central Asia and Middle East. He retired from military service in 2005, having the rank of Major General.
He graduated from Hellenic Evelpidon Military Academy in 1975, the Hellenic War College in 1991 and the Hellenic National Defense College in 1999. He also attained the U. S. Army Armor School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He has served as a Full Professor in the Hellenic War College, while from 2011 to 2015 he was the Professor of “Military Strategy” at the Hellenic Evelpidon Military Academy. He was born in Athens, Greece in 1952. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
